Peninsular Bighorn Sheep #3; Anza-Borrego Desert State Park (order # wif29h)

The Peninsular Bighorn has been in steady decline for many years. Efforts are being made to reverse this trend and with help from the public, this creature may once again roam far and wide throughout its desert habitat. If you would like to help with this effort please see the Anza-Borrego Foundation.

This picture was captured while on a hike to one of the numerous palm oasis in Anza-Borrego, but was well beyond the maintained trail. We were quietly ambling along over boulders, and through scrub, all the while watching for rattle snakes, when we were stunned to look up and see not just one male bighorn, but two! We abruptly stopped so as not to startle them while they made their way towards the stream bed. I put my camera body on my Leica spotting scope and knocked out about two dozen shots. Incredible animals to watch. After a few minutes we turned back for the trailhead and let them have their stream in peace. Not another soul was to be found that day, but we sure found a memory.

Enjoy!
