We absolutely love this shot. It was taken in 1998, on our way along the Yellowhead Highway in Jasper National Park. We were viewing some bighorn along a ridge line when this male walked over the ridge and into view, with this crazy bird perched on its horn. This is one of those shots you just know will get away from you as you get your equipment set up. I quietly put my camera body on the spotting scope and all the while the bighorn, and the bird, just kept watching us. I loaded some film and still no movement. I was almost ready. Set the focus, check the lighting, my God they are still there. Fire away. I must have shot a roll and a half waiting for the bird to turn profile. The bird did not cooperate. Finally, the bird turns and I fire off another few shots. Ahhh, portrait of a bird. The bighorn seemed to almost enjoy the attention and just kept giving the perfect pose. At last, the bighorn moseys off with the bird still firmly planted on his horn. What a sight. I was chuckling when we left the scene and to this day am grateful to have this memory. |
